Two Finds

This isn’t new. They’ve been doing it for a hundred years.

1920s

The man who invented breakfast

Edward Bernays, nephew of Sigmund Freud, inventor of modern advertising. His job: sell more bacon. So he had doctors asked whether a hearty breakfast was healthier, collected the yes votes and turned them into headlines.

Ever since, Americans have eaten bacon and eggs. Not because it’s healthy. Because somebody had pork to get rid of.

You can read it in Bernays’ own records

1967

When sugar bought its way out

The sugar industry paid scientists at Harvard to shift the blame for heart disease away from sugar in a major review. Onto fat. Who paid for it wasn’t stated anywhere.

For fifty years after that, you avoided fat and ate sugar. Fifty years. In 2016 a research team found the internal documents and published them. You can look it up.
